Affiliate marketing is like being a commissioned salesperson. It is of the best places to start an online business because you don't have to worry about creating a product, product fulfilment, returns or even building a website. It works by you promoting a product or service that has been created by somebody else. You get then get paid by the product owner when somebody buys it.
A lot of online business people have made, and are making, a good living from affiliate marketing. But many people also fail. Here are five reasons why:
1. Not Building A List
There is a popular saying in affiliate marketing - "The money is in the list". This is the list of names of people who are your prospective buyers. One of the most important affiliate marketing jobs is to get people to opt-in to your mailing list first. When promoting a product, don't send traffic just to an affiliate link. Once people are on your list, you have the opportunity in the future to promote other relevant products or services.
2. Promoting Bad Products
When you become an affiliate you are associating yourself with the product or service you will be selling and everything the product owner does reflects on you, so you do want to choose the best product or service that suits you and your market. There are thousands of products and services available to sell at online marketplaces like ClickBank, JVZoo and WarrorPlus.
3. Promoting Products That Offer Low Commissions
There are many different products available for the budding affiliate marketing entrepreneur and generally these are broken down into one-time payment and recurring payment products.
Ideally, you want to promote a product that offers a 50% to 75% commission for a one-time payment product. If the commission rate is lower, see if the product pays a recurring commission. This could be something like a software licence or a membership website. Although the upfront sale might be a little lower, it does means that you'll get paid every month that the buyer stays with the product.
4. Not Developing A Relationship With The People on Your List
Successful affiliate marketing is more than just sending out an email with a product link hoping that somebody will buy it. You need to continually provide value to the people on your list and build a relationship with them so that they come to value and trust your advice. Think of affiliate marketing as helping rather than selling. As people become to trust your judgement and knowledge within your marketplace they will be more inclined to buy the products that you recommend.
5. Thinking You'll Get Rich Quick
If affiliate marketing was as simple as picking out a few products, emailing them to a list of people and then watching the commissions come pouring in, every affiliate marketer would be successful. Being an affiliate takes time, money and work. Plus, you have to be willing to learn the skills required.
When building an online business there can seem to be a mountain of obstacles to climb - from understanding search engine optimisation to blogging, from pay per click advertising to social media marketing, from finding the right products to sell to finding customers to buy them, the list goes on.
